Bad Week For Reggie Bush Ends With Broken Leg

For a guy who plays for the defending Superbowl champions, Reggie Bush hasn’t had a very good week. First it was the debacle about his NCAA eligibility while at USC–his family was found to have taken money from agents and that made him retroactively ineligible. In a classic case of ‘you can’t fire me, I quit’, Bush returned his Heisman Trophy which he hoped would end the controversy and let him focus on football.
That worked out fine for a few days, until he suffered a leg injury late in the Saints’ 25-22 win over the San Francisco 49ers. Bush went after a muffed punt that he lost in the wind at Candlestick Park, and injured himself trying to dive on the loose ball:
“Last second it kind of shifted a little bit, just enough for me to drop it. I tried to recover it and somebody took my leg out. I don’t know who it was, what happened or how it happened. I just know my leg got taken out. That’s it.”
He had to be helped off the field and although he’s not a doctor he does know how it felt:
“It hurt like hell. When I got back up and tried to walk on it, it felt terrible. That’s all I can say.”
After the game, Bush had the leg wrapped in ice and was getting around with crutches:
“I’m just trying not to think the worst and just try to stay as positive as I can in this situation. That’s all you can do, hope for the best.”
Early indications are that Bush broke his right fibula and will have further tests upon his return to New Orleans. Bush concluded by saying what everyone else was no doubt thinking:
“It’s been a pretty tough week. It’s just the way life goes.”
Until the injury Bush had played a solid game, with a touchdown pass and a 43 yard punt return to set up a Saints’ field goal. For you sadists out there, the NFL has provided a video of the injury though you’ll have to sit through a Mickey D’s commercial first:
