NFL Betting Preview: New England Patriots at New York Jets
Added on Sep 19, 2010 by Jack Thurman in
Big AFC East showdown as the New York Jets host the New England Patriots. Pats cleaned house last weekend in their opening game, easily beating the Cincinnati Bengals at home. The Jets had a much tougher task, and lost to the Baltimore Ravens in a low scoring game. The big storyline here is the matchup between the Patriots’ Randy Moss and the Jets’ Darrelle Revis and despite some ‘hamstring tightness’ in practice this week he’s expected to play.

You’ll hear us stress over and over again the importance of not overreacting to short term performances and particularly in the NFL. That’s the only way to explain how the New York Jets are +3 home underdogs to the Patriots in this matchup. A little pointspread math tells us that factor in the home field advantage and this line suggests that the Pats are nearly a TD favorite on a neutral field. No way. The Jets’ offense looked sluggish in their opener but this is a team that went 11-8 SU/ATS last year with the league’s best defense. There’s been some changes, but at the very least the team is just as good and you can make a strong case that they upgraded at several positions.
The Jets are off a short week having played on Monday and the Pats have beaten them 12 of the last 15 times they’ve played. But New England simply isn’t as good as they were several years ago. The defense in particular is down significantly from their Superbowl contenders of the past several seasons. That can’t be said about the Jets, and they should be able to put pressure on Brady while exploiting the Pats’ defensive liabilities. New York won and covered at home last season as +3′ point dogs–the Jets have become a better, more confident team since then and the same can’t be said about New England. Jets win outright.
