Fantasy Football Injury Update: Rams WR Donnie Avery Out for the Season with Torn ACL

Before Thursday night’s preseason game between the St. Louis Rams and the New England Patriots, the consensus was that rookie quarterback Sam Bradford and wide receiver Donnie Avery really didn’t have much fantasy value as neither player was worthy of drafting.

Fortunately for Bradford, after last night’s impressive performance of 189 yards (15 of 22), two touchdowns and no interceptions, the former Heisman trophy winner has started to turn heads as he could end up being a fantasy sleeper this season, but later in the game the Rams saw their best wide receiver Donnie Avery go down with a torn .

Without Donnie Avery downfield, Sam Bradford will struggle to get this offense going as he will have no other viable options, but the Rams will be working the waiver wires and looking into free agent wide receivers.

Unfortunately, the Rams didn’t take address this potent problem in the offseason as they could have very well have gotten their hands of former Super Bowl MVP wide receiver Santonio Holmes (New York Jets) or All-Pro wideout Terrell Owens (Cincinnati Bengals), but for some reason they were content with their current roster and now face a huge problem with their receiving corps.

So even though you may have already crossed off quarterback Sam Bradford and wide receiver Donnie Avery on his fantasy football cheat sheet, don’t listen to all the hype about Bradford as we get closer to the NFL regular season because is bound to struggle this season and without Avery things have gotten even worse in St. Louis for the rookie quarterback.

The only player on the St. Louis Rams that should get any fantasy football consideration is running back Stephen Jackson.

Personally, I am not a fan of Jackson as I purposely stay away from him during my fantasy football draft as he seems streaky and unreliable in my opinion, but some people swear by him.

In my opinion, if any player poses a risk with a weak offense or an injury plagued history, that should be enough to convince you to look elsewhere.
