Oscar De La Hoya and the rest of the gang at Golden Boy Promotions made history within their company as they went north of the border to sign the undefeated junior middleweight prospect, Mikael Zewski, making him the first Canadian born pugilist on GBP’s already impressive roster. Zewski made his debut as a pro in February when he TKO’d Kevin Kibler in the third round. His official record stands at four wins with three of them coming by way of stoppage.
“This is an exciting day in the history of Golden Boy Promotions as we are pleased to welcome Mikael Zewski, our first Canadian boxer, to the team,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. ”With packed arenas and some of the game’s most exciting fighters emerging from around the country, the Canadian boxing market is exploding. We believe we have one of those exciting fighters in Mikael and we’re expecting big things from him in the coming years.”
“First, I want to thank Golden Boy Promotions for giving me this huge opportunity,” said Zewski. ”Today is the most exciting day of my career so far and it means so much tome to sign with Oscar de la Hoya’s company because he has always been a role model to me. Plus, I’m the only Canadian fighter on their team and I can’t wait to fight and show everybody what I can do. I know I have a bright future in front of me with Golden Boy.”
A native of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, the 21-year-old Zewski first came to the attention of the boxing world during a stellar amateur career that saw him compile a 138-29 record, including a win over Cuban star Carlos Suarez Banteaux. Zewski, who is managed by Cameron Dunkin, is a four-time Canadian National Champion and counts among his accolades a Silver Medal at the 2004 Youth Pan Am Championships, as well as a fifth place finish in the 2009 Senior World Championships.
Trained by his father Jean, Zewski’s first three professional bouts took place on US soil. Following his win over Kibler he made his way out West to Commerce, California where he retired Moses Alvizo in the second round of Alvizo’s debut. That win took him out to Iowa City where he saw a fight go to the scorecards for the first time as a pro as he outpointed Alex De Leon unanimously over the course of four rounds.
Most recently, he made his way back home to Quebec getting back to his knockout ways as he disposed of the veteran John Hoffman in just 1:45 of the first round.
Golden Boy Promotions looks to showcase their most recent acquisition later this year.
