Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Dominates Shane Mosley

Floyd Mayweather may not be the most likable guy in the world, but there’s no questioning that he’s a fighter of immense talent. On May 1 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Mayweather dominated and thoroughly outclassed ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley en route to a lopsided 119-109, 119-109, 118-110 unanimous decision victory. Many observers thought that the double tough Mosley would be a good test for Mayweather, but after a strong first round he was never in the fight.

Against Shane Mosley, Mayweather’s deadly combination of speed and skill was downright overwhelming. Mosley gave a good account early in the fight, rocking Mayweather in the second round with some powerful right. After two rounds it looked like Mayweather might be in for the toughest fight of his career.

Mayweather recovered from the 2^nd round onslaught and then some. For the rest of the fight Mayweather put on yet another boxing clinic. He didn’t hesitate to work inside and exchange with Mosley for the simple reason that he had his opponent completely figured out and realized that his handspeed was vastly superior.

All in all, it was another great performance from one of the best defensive fighters in boxing history. Mayweather took the next ten rounds on all three official scorecards. Even by the most favorable judging criteria, Mosley won only two of the twelve rounds and on two of the three judges’ cards won only the second round. A fighter with less heart than Mosley wouldn’t have seen the end of the fight as Mayweather repeatedly landed sharp lead right hands. Rounds 9 and 10 were particularly one sided—by CompuBox numbers Mosley threw 45 punches in round 9 and landed only 3. In round 10, he threw 40 punches and landed 6.

After the fight, both men demonstrated considerable class in praising the skill and toughness of their adversary. While Mayweather talked about his future fight plans, Shane Mosley sounded like a fighter contemplating the end of the road. Mosley is as gutsy a competitor as ever but at age 38 might be at the point where he’s no longer able to be competitive. ‘Sugar Shane’ has always been an asset to the sweet science, but it may be time for him to call it a career.
