College Basketball Betting Picks: Seton Hall @ Rutgers
Added on Mar 05, 2010 by Jack Thurman in
College basketball betting will be the focal point at sportsbooks for the next month, and we’ll take a look at a Big East game between Seton Hall and Rutgers. Both teams have losing records in conference, though are above .500 overall. Unless they win the Big East tournament, its unlikely that either team will get a NCAA bid though an NIT invite isn’t out of the realm of possibility for both.

You can always do much worse than taking the underdog in a Big East matchup, and particularly a home dog between two evenly matched squads. Rutgers covered an earlier meeting on Seton Hall’s home court, losing by 6 as a +12 road underdog. Aside from the ‘general principle’ of playing a Big East home dog, there’s a lot to like about a Rutgers team that boasts one of the best scoring defenses in the conference. Their physical play and superior rebounding caused problems for Seton Hall’s transition game in the earlier meeting, and there’s no reason to think it won’t be even more effective on their home floor.
The Pirates have been a horrible sports betting pointspread team this season–they’re 6-15 ATS overall, 2-9 ATS on the road and 3-8 ATS as a favorite. They’ve covered only 4 of 16 Big East games and are 5-13 ATS against teams with a winning record. Numbers like that suggest a team that is seriously overvalued by the wagering public. Rutgers isn’t a great ATS team either, with only a 12-12 overall record against the spread but they are 7-6 ATS at home. We look for them to control tempo here and get the outright win.
