NHL Betting Free Picks: Calgary @ Phoenix
Added on Jan 29, 2010 by Jack Thurman in
Not much NBA tonight but this sportsbook has a good sized offering of NHL betting opportunities on the board. We’ll take a look out west where the struggling Calgary Flames will head to Phoenix to take on the Coyotes. Flames lost their 8th straight game on Wednesday night, though salvaged a point in a shootout verdict against Dallas. Phoenix won 5-4 at Detroit on Tuesday night.

The Flames can’t get out of their own way lately, though they are still clinging to the final playoff spot in the Western Conference despite their recent tailspin. Calgary has no breathing room whatsoever as they’re tied with 9th place Detroit with 58 points though hold tiebreakers. Flames’ offense showed a little life in the loss to Dallas, as they scored 3 goals–only the 3rd time in 11 games they’ve put more than 2 on the board. Calgary’s lack of scoring has led to a recent spate of Under games despite the losses.
Phoenix is still playing solid hockey, right in the middle of the Western Conference pack in a season where many expected them to be completely non-competitive. Fortunately, the Coyotes have managed to play well despite their off ice ownership issues. For much of the year, betting the Coyotes Under the total was one of the best investments in sports betting. More recently, however, they’ve started to open things up a bit and score more goals. Phoenix has now gone Over in 7 of their last 9 games with only 1 UN and 1 push in that stretch
So in what looks initially like the ultimate ‘Under’ play of the NHL season we’re going to look to go ‘Over’ the low total. While we note that the previous two meetings this year went Under the total we’re also aware that the dynamic was different for both games. Phoenix was still playing a conservative defensive style on most nights while Calgary wasn’t desperate for a win. Flames need to score more goals even if they give up a few more on the other end or they’ll keep losing games. For that reason, we expect at least enough scoring here to get more than 5 goals on the board.
