NHL Betting Free Picks: Calgary @ Dallas

Only 5 NHL hockey games on online sportsbook boards for Wednesday, but we’ll look for a good NHL betting opportunity out West as the Calgary Flames hit the road to play the Dallas Stars. Flames in a tailspin right now, having lost 7 straight games and falling to 9th place in the Western Conference. Dallas is right behind them, tied with Anaheim for 10th place 3 points behind Calgary and 4 points out of a playoff spot. For that reason alone, this is a big game for both teams though Calgary simply needs to get a win in the books.

In a strange way, a road trip could be the best thing to happen to Calgary at this point as they can try to get back on the winning track away from their increasingly disenchanted home fans. Flames actually have a better record on the road (14-8-3) than at the Pengrowth Saddledome (12-12-3) in large part because their defensive oriented style is tailor made to play in hostile rinks. Calgary has only gone Over in 9 of 25 games away from home (13 UN, 3 push) but with their recent lack of offense they’ve been a solid Under bet in any situation. Flames have only gone Over in 2 of their L13 games (9 UN, 2 push).
Dallas hasn’t played particularly well of late either with only 5 wins in their L13 games. Their defense has been suspect during their recent games, but nothing will help that like a game against the sputtering Flames. Teams have split two meetings this year with one game Over and one Under–not surprisingly, the Calgary win was the one that went Under. The Over earlier this year was an aberration for the series, as 8 of the L9 head to head including 4 straight in Dallas have gone Under the total. Flames have demonstrated throughout their losing streak that they can still control the tempo and style of games against most teams, but they can’t score enough goals to get wins. As the losing streak continues, they’ve played even ‘tighter’ on defense and until they get that monkey off their back we expect that tendency to continue.
