NHL hockey betting action tonight focuses on Calgary, Alberta where the swooning Flames will host the red hot Chicago Blackhawks. Calgary has struggled to score goals over the past month and in their past couple of games have broken down on the defensive end. Chicago had their own offensive struggles early in the season but are now playing well in all phases of the game and trail San Jose by only two points for the best record in the NHL. We’ll have a sports bet on the total in this contest.

Flames hit rock bottom last time out against San Jose, allowing a whopping 9 goals. That’s 14 goals against in their last two games–more than the team had allowed in their previous *five* games. After scoring four goals against Anaheim on Sunday night they were held to a single score against the Sharks. Calgary has only scored more than four goals in a game twice in their last 24 games. Chicago looked flat in their last outing, a 4-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators and should have full focus here.
That’s bad news for a Flames’ team that has struggled with the Blackhawks of late. The Ottawa loss notwithstanding, Chicago is in excellent form having won 10 of their last 14 games. They’ve also improved to be one of the league’s highest scoring teams which will be a problem for the Flames as well. Typically, Calgary is a team that we look to play ‘under’ but their games against Chicago have been wide open, high scoring affairs. Blackhawks have won both meetings this season, 7-1 in Calgary and 6-5 at home. That’s an average of 9.5 goals per game scored. The last 12 head to head matchups between the teams have seen no fewer than five total goals scored. Chicago should be able to dictate the tempo and style of this game, and they’re a team that has gone Under in only four of their last 14 games (9 OV, 1 push). Look for a shootout at the Pengrowth Saddledome in a game that should go well Over the total.
