Fantasy Football Week 9 Picks

Finding free agent gems and competent bye week replacements is turning into a frustrating process during the 2012 fantasy football season. This week Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Wes Welker, Stevan Ridley and Frank Gore owners are crossing fingers their bench comes through, or combing waiver wires to locate players with favorable matchups. To those in need, here are some names to consider.
Cam Newton (@ WAS) – The sophomore slumping superstar has been a conundrum in 2012. He’s on pace to throw only eleven touchdown passes and his rushing totals aren’t providing adequate compensation. Unless you’re fortunate enough to have Luck, RG III or Big Ben as a backup, you’ve probably been cursing Cam every Sunday. This week he draws the Redskins 32nd ranked pass defense. Get him active ASAP.
Mikel Leshoure (vs DET) – Leshoure’s first game back in Week 3 was his best. Since then he’s been serviceable, but hardly dominant. The Lions love of toss the ball around the stadium and have been playing catchup quite a bit, which has limited the bruising back’s effectiveness. The Jags have been surprisingly stingy on defense, but they are still vulnerable. 75 yards and a score isn’t out of the question.
Pierre Thomas (vs PHI) – With Darren Sproles out with a busted hand, Thomas should see increased snaps. The Eagles are a mess right now after being shredded by the Falcons. However, their run defense has been mostly solid. If you’re desperate for a flex or a low end number two back, Thomas is worth a look.
Mike Williams (@ OAK) – Due in large part to the presence of Vinnie Jackson, Williams in enjoying a bounce-back season. Neither the Bucs or Raiders boast particularly stalwart defenses, so this could end up being a shootout. Plus, Josh Freeman is on a roll lately. Williams should get chances to make some big plays, especially in the red zone.
Sidney Rice (@ MIN) – The ex-Viking should be motivated to face his former team and is steadily becoming young Russell Wilson’s go-to option in the passing game. This will be a low scoring ground assault type game, but Rice should get a couple of downfield opportunities.
Jermaine Gresham (vs DEN) – With the tight end position being annoyingly inconsistent, it’s not easy finding guys who are producing on a weekly basis. The Broncos have been annihilated by Antonio Gates and Dave Thomas the last two weeks. Gresham should be is line for a nice day.
