NFC West battle on prime time Thursday night as the San Francisco 49ers look to bounce back from an embarrassing home loss to the New York Giants. The Niners were beaten badly in a rematch of their NFC Championship game loss from a year ago and now must host the improved Seattle Seahawks.

Two teams coming in to this matchup experiencing diametrically opposed emotions. The Niners will be looking to bounce back from an embarrassing loss to the Giants while the Seahawks are coming in off a come from behind upset of the New England Patriots at Century Link Field on Sunday. Tactically, this is a bad matchup for San Francisco as they can’t rely on Frank Gore to carry the load. Pete Carroll’s Seahawks have the #2 ranked run defense in the NFL which means that there will be plenty of pressure on Alex Smith to generate something through the air. That’s by no means a ‘given’ either since the Seahawks pass coverage is good and getting better. They’re currently ranked #13 in passing yards per game against and got a serious boost in their confidence thanks to an impressive game against Tom Brady in the second half of Sunday’s win.
X’s and O’s aside, there’s every reason to expect San Francisco to come out breathing fire in this game. The Seahawks have to regroup in a short preparation week off a very satisfying win. They’ll run into a Niners team coming in off of their worst loss of Jim Harbaugh’s coaching tenure. Sunday’s debacle against the Giants notwithstanding, San Francisco has been a hugely profitable team during Harbaugh’s run going 19-8-1 ATS and 10-2-1 at home. Seattle may not be quite as bad on the road as in the past, but it’s still tough to back the Seahawks away from the ‘Jet City’. Seattle currently on a 6-14 SU/5-13-1 ATS run on the road since 2010. Look for the Niners to prove their championship pedigree as they put up a decisive win over the young–though improving–Seattle Seahawks. We also like the Under in this game as defense will be the key on both sides of the field.
