Monday Night Football Betting: Green Bay Packers at Seattle Seahawks

Week 3 of NFL football action finishes up on Monday night with an intriguing game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks at Century Link Field in the ‘Jet City’. The Seahawks are 1-1, coming off an impressive win over the Dallas Cowboys. They opened the year with a loss against the Arizona Cardinals–a setback that looks far less embarrassing given the impressive play of the AZ defense in running off back to back wins over Philadelphia and New England. The Packers are also 1-1, losing to San Francisco on opening day and recovering with a win over Chicago last week.

A common mistake of beginning NFL bettors is not understanding the value that the pointspread represents. In particular, many fail to understand the importance of the key number of 3. More NFL football games end in a three point margin than any other so obviously this is also the most common pointspread that betting enthusiasts encounter. Many feel incorrectly that this is just an arbitrary number when that is decidedly not the case.
It’s also very important to this matchup. Depending on where you bet the game you can find it at Green Bay -3, Green Bay -3 with a moneyline in the -120 to -125 range or Green Bay -3′. This isn’t a case where you can just pick any price and hope for the best. The 1/2 point distinction between -3 to -3′ (or +3 to +3′) is as important as any in the sport.
And here’s the reason for the theory lesson–we like Seattle in this game as a home dog but only at +3′. That 1/2 point is so crucial and we want it working in our favor. If you can’t get anything better than +3 we recommend a ‘pass’. Having said this, we won’t be surprised if Seattle wins this game outright. Both teams have potential ‘lookahead games’–the Packers get the New Orleans Saints at home while the Seahawks go on the road to play their divisional rivals the St. Louis Rams. We just think Seattle is a seriously underrated team and especially at home–Century Link Field is one of the toughest venues in the NFL for visiting teams to play in.
