The opening of NFL training camps and the return of preseason games means injuries. The unfortunate reality of professional football is that some players seasons will end before they even start, or at the very least be delayed by days or weeks due to various bruises, breaks and tears. Here’s a quick rundown of who’s hurting.

Kevin Kolb (Cardinals) – It didn’t take long for Kevin Kolb to lose ground in his race with John Skelton for Arizona’s starting quarterback job. His first pass of the night in the Hall of Fame game was intercepted and then he exited with bruised ribs before the first quarter was over. Pretty much par for the course for Kolb, who has been extremely underwhelming since inking a $65 million deal in 2011.

Santonio Holmes (Jets) – Speaking of ribs, Holmes will likely miss Friday night’s preseason opener against the Bengals with bruised rib cartilage suffered in a Saturday scrimmage. Holmes has had a headline-filled offseason after basically giving up at the end of last year’s disappointing 8-8 campaign.

Brian Urlacher (Bears) – Chicago’s defensive leader is nursing a sore knee that could cause him to miss the majority of the preseason. A veteran of his stature doesn’t need training camp, but this doesn’t bode well for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

Greg Jennings (Packers) – The Pro Bowl wide receiver could be sidelined more than a week after being diagnosed with a concussion last Friday. Jennings has had a rough camp so far this summer; an elbow injury caused him to miss a few days already. He also sat out three games in 2011 with a sprained MCL.

Greg Childs (Vikings) – The rookie wide receiver tore both his patellar tendons while leaping for a ball during Saturday’s practice. Considering he shredded the right tendon in college, it’s not a stretch to think his career could be in jeopardy.
