With all but a couple of teams opening their 2012 training camps, the NFL is close to being back in full swing. Position battles are underway, rookies are fighting to keep their heads above water and new head coaches are attempting to establish chemistry. Here’s the latest news making headlines at camps across the country.

Rams go Long – Defensive end Chris Long got paid by the Rams on Sunday. A new four-year deal is expected to make him one of the highest paid players at his position. He has recorded 30.5 sacks in his first four seasons, including 13 in 2011.

Cam backs guarantee – The face of the Carolina Panthers has zero problem with offensive lineman Ryan Kalil’s Super Bowl promise. Cam Newton is confident the Cats can make a monumental leap during his sophomore campaign and believes each and every member of the roster trusts one another. We shall see.

Brees bashes Commish – Drew Brees didn’t pull any punches when asked about players feelings toward Commissioner Roger Goodell. “Nobody trusts him,” Brees said in a recent interview. In wake of the Saints bounty scandal, a healthy amount of bitterness has been aimed at Goodell, who continues to seem unfazed by the criticism.

Smith speaks the truth – Chargers maligned GM A.J. Smith trashed himself and his team in a sitdown with Peter King. San Diego’s swoon the last two years has turned them from contender to laughing stock and Smith admits they deserve all the negative attacks. Nice to hear honest statements like that, because the Bolts are definitely one of the league’s biggest underachievers.

Haley hands it off – Despite the injury to starting running back Rashard Mendenhall, new Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley has been grounding and pounding in the first summer practices. Perhaps the Mike Wallace holdout has something to do with this, or maybe Haley is trying to reestablish the run-first approach that made Pittsburgh one of the game’s most dominant franchises.
