The Philadelphia Eagles were the first team to officially open training camp on Sunday. The other 31 franchises will follow suit in the coming days. As we speed closer to the impending 2012 season, there is much to talk about on both the player and coaching front.  Here are some stories from around the league making noise as the offseason comes to a welcome end.

Steelers extend Tomlin – When you guide your team to a pair of Super Bowl appearances in your first six years as  coach, a new contract is all but guaranteed. The Steelers locked up head coach Mike Tomlin for another three years which will keep him pacing the black and gold sidelines until 2016.

Lions dump Berry – Detroit’s offseason of incarceration has tarnished a team with high expectations in 2012. Rather than roll out the list of excuses after cornerback Aaron Berry’s second arrest, the Lions did the right thing from a public relations standpoint and released the troubled player on Monday. Berry was in line to slide into a starting role. Now his career is stuck in neutral.

Eagles courting tight ends – Visanthe Shiancoe worked out for the Eagles yesterday. Jeremy Shockey is reportedly scheduled to do the same in the coming days. The Birds have a solid number one in Brent Celek, but it never hurts to add depth at the position. Especially with two tight end sets becoming all the rage.

No more Ocho – Bye, bye Chad Ochocinco. Hello Chad Johnson… again. The self-promoting wideout officially changed his name back to Johnson following his recent nuptials, thus ending one of the most ridiculous chapters in the history of ill-conceived athlete names. You’ll be missed, Ocho. Not really.

Cardinals lock up Wilson – Pro Bowl safety Adrian Wilson will remain in the desert for perhaps the rest of his career after he inked a brand new four-year deal. The 32-year-old has notched 22.5 sacks, 26 interceptions and 13 forced fumbles in eleven seasons with the Cardinals.
