Crime and Contract Updates
Added on Jul 17, 2012 by Scott in
With training camps set to open in less than two weeks, players and coaches are squeezing in their last days of freedom before the six-month long season launches. This means contracts for rookies and tagged players are being finalized and guys who like to live life on the edge are running afoul of the law. Here are some updates from the police blotter and the front office.
Rice gets paid – In the wake of Matt Forte’s new deal with the Bears, Baltimore’s dual threat runner Ray Rice got paid. Rather than play the 2012 season on a one-year tender, the Ravens locked up their most dangerous offensive weapon with a five-year, $35 million extension. Rice has posted three consecutive 1000-plus yards campaigns while catching 217 passes.
Bryant busted – The topsy-turvy career of Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant took another wrong turn yesterday when he was arrested for domestic violence against his mother. Bryant allegedly grabbed his mother and struck her in the face with a ball cap. He has run into trouble before, but this is the first time he has been officially incarcerated. Since this is his first offense, it’s unlikely either the league or Cowboys will suspend him, although sitting him down for a game or two might do him some good.
Lynch pinched – Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is no stranger to police stations. He has been investigated for hit and run in 2008 and a misdemeanor gun charge in 2009. Well, it could be three strikes and out or Lynch after his weekend arrest on suspicion of DUI in Oakland. Seattle inked the bruising back to a four-year, $31 million contract in March after rushing for a career high 1204 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2011.
T.O. a no show – Champion self-promoter and sometimes wide receiver Terrell Owens skipped a hearing last week on unpaid child support. Mr. Me owes $20,000 to the mother of his 7-year-old daughter, and he could face jail time if he misses another hearing. Just got away, T.O. Please.
