Major League Baseball is in their annual All Star break with no games (other than the All Star Game and it’s accompanying events) slated until Friday night. This is a good chance to look back at the first half of the season at the ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ of the 2012 campaign. And we’re not talking about the same ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ that the mainstream baseball media is talking about–that’s easy enough to determine by looking at the standings in the sports section. We’ll be looking at the winners and losers at the betting window. In this article, we’ll look at which teams have made the most money for their ‘financial backers’. In the next article we’ll consider the teams that have been the worst investment for baseball betting enthusiasts.

THE WINNERS:

PITTSBURGH PIRATES: The Pittsburgh Pirates have been the best investment in Major League Baseball so far this season and by a wide margin posting +18.75 units of profit. It’s the perfect storm of a team that has struggled through much of the past two decades finally showing signs of competitive life and getting better than expected pitching in the process. Betting lines are starting to catch up with the Pirates and just how good this team has become, but there may still be value to be had in the second half.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES: The O’s are starting to slip in the tough AL East but year to date have produced +12.35 units of profit for their financial backers. The AL East is quickly becoming a battle for second place as the New York Yankees are threatening to run away with the crown–they’re currently 7 games ahead of the second place Orioles and Baltimore now has to worry about Tampa Bay just 1/2 back. The O’s are still something of an underrated team–there’s a perception that they ‘don’t belong’ in the AL East elite–but it could be that most of this team’s profits are behind them.

NEW YORK METS/WASHINGTON NATIONALS: These NL East rivials are tied for third place, having produced +9.65 units of profit this season. The Mets may have more upside going forward as the secret is out about the Nationals’ talented starting rotation. Prices have been high on ace Steven Strasburg pretty much since he came to the Majors and now the market is starting to catch on to just how good lefthander Gio Gonzalez really is. The best value in betting Washington could be deeper in the rotation with Jordan Zimmerman (2.61 ERA) and Ross Detwiller. The Mets could be a strong investment going forward–they were written off heading into the season but have been fairly consistent all year and taken advantage of the Philadelphia Phillies struggles.
