Jason Hammel

Two winning teams go at it on Wednesday night as the Baltimore Orioles host the Los Angeles Angels at Camden Yards. Baltimore is currently in 2nd place in the brutally tough AL East while the Angels are 4.5 games back of the Texas Rangers in the AL East.

The Angels are one of the hottest teams in baseball at the moment having won 7 of their last 10 games and will start a pitcher that may be in even better form. Jered Weaver has been exceptional all year with a 2.40 ERA overall and the Angels have won 9 of his 12 starts. He’s pitched some of his best ball of the season in his most recent starts–in his last three assignments Weaver has allowed only 1 earned run in 14 innings of work for a tidy 0.64 ERA.

Weaver is the bigger name but Baltimore’s Jason Hammel is also putting up great numbers this year. Overall, Hammel has a 2.61 ERA with the Orioles winning 11 of his 14 starts. At home they’ve won 5 of Hammel’s 6 starts and he’s posted a 2.01 ERA. In his last three assignments he’s allowed only 4 earned runs for a 1.57 ERA–all three games Baltimore wins. He’ll enter this game on a 17 inning streak during which he’s not allowed an earned run.

If Weaver has a weakness it’s on the road–he’s got a 4.21 ERA in six road starts and the Angels have split those games. Baltimore has lost 6 of their last 10 games but we have to respect their strong showing this year particularly as it concerns baseball betting profits. Entering this game the Orioles have made more money than any team in the Majors (+17.2 units). They’ve been profitable in almost every split including home games and against right handed pitching. Perhaps their most impressive record is their performance against teams with winning records–against opponents with a record over .500 they’re 27-16 +16.9 units.

The Angels got off to a very poor start and have rebounded nicely but the fact remains that they’ve lost money for their financial backers this season. Los Angeles is -4.7 units overall and the bulk of those deficits have come on the road (-4.2 units). We respect Weaver and his current form, but would much rather back Baltimore and Hammel as a home underdog.

Bet Baltimore Orioles (Hammel) +115 over LA Angels (Weaver)
