Perhaps the best thing about baseball betting is the ability to immediately take advantage of an incorrect valuation between two teams involved. Many successful baseball handicappers look to play every game in a specific series, knowing that a 2-1 record will earn a profit. In this series, however, there’s no real reason that we can’t get the sweep with the surging White Sox. Regardless of their opponent, the Cardinals are a definite ‘go against’ at this stage of the game–they’ve been in dismal form over the past couple of weeks and head into this game having lost 9 of their last 13 contests and are back at the .500 mark with a 31-31 record for the season. They’ve been equally as mediocre at home as on the road sporting a 17-17 record on the road and a 14-13 record at home.
Starting pitcher Lance Lynn certainly can’t be blamed for the Cardinals’ recent regression as he’s been exceptional all year–Lynn has a 9-2 record with a 2.66 ERA overall and St. Louis has won 9 of his 12 starts overall including 3 of 4 at home. He’s been nothing if not consistent, allowing 2 ER in each of his last three assignments.
The White Sox will counter with Jake Peavy who is very close to regaining his All Star form of years’ past. Peavy has had only 2 bad starts all year but they’ve inflated his ERA to 3.05 overall. The reality is much more impressive than that statistic would suggest–with the exception of his two bad starts, both of which took place at home, he’s allowed 3 or fewer earned runs in every game this year. He’s been very good on the road with a 1.75 ERA, and the Sox have won 3 of his 4 away assignments along with 9 of 12 overall.
The White Sox have been at their best on the road where they’re 18-9 +11.8 units. They’re also 27-18 +8.1 units against right handed pitching. Of great concern throughout this series has been St. Louis’ horrific performance against teams with winning records. Against teams with a record over .500 the Cards are a pitiful 5-15 -13.1 units. The White Sox are rounding into pennant contenting form while the Cards look to be regressing to the pack.
