Ahman Green Wants Back With the Packers

No, this isn’t 2005. The headline reads right. Retired running back Ahman Green wants a shot at returning to the team where he achieved his greatest success: the Green Bay Packers. At the not so tender age of 35, Green hasn’t played a down in the NFL since 2010. After kicking around the UFL and CFL for the last two years, Green is ready to jump on the comeback trail that leads to Lambeau Field.
His chances of finding his way on the Packers roster, or any other team for that matter, are remote. However, at least he’s not deluded enough to think he’s starting material.
“I’ve got at least five years left in me to play football,” Green told FOXSportsWisconsin.com. “I came into the league in special teams and I’d have no problem doing that again. Playing special teams in kickoff coverage, punt coverage. Just put me anywhere. I’m a football player first. That’s something my dad always reminded me. ‘You’re a football player, not just a running back.’ ”
Hey, anything to land a Super Bowl ring, right? Green must still be kicking himself that he didn’t hang around for the 2010 championship season. Then he could’ve ended his career on a high note. With the Pack fresh off a 15-1 campaign and seemingly poised for another Big Game run, their coattails are ripe for the riding.
From 2000 -2006, Green was one the league’s most consistent and prolific runners, registering six 1000-yard seasons and scoring 67 total touchdowns. The former Cornhusker was a potent dual threat and a Fantasy Football stalwart, but that was a long time ago.
If he manages to earn a training camp invite, he will become an intriguing storyline to follow this summer. However, proving himself capable of contributing on special teams is easier said than done. Tackling speedy, elusive return men is a chore at age 22, let alone 35.
