Jeff Fisher

Former Tennessee Titans head coach wants to return to the NFL. After sitting out the 2011 season following his exit last January, Fisher is suddenly a popular candidate to fill one of the five coaching vacancies currently open. Tampa Bay, Miami and now St. Louis have all showed interest in bringing him aboard, although Fisher is weighing his options on which team would be the best fit.

It’s been reported that Fisher wants a stable quarterback situation wherever he lands. If that’s true then the Dolphins can be scratched off the list. No offense to Matt Moore, who actually played decent in 2011, but he’s not the definition of a franchise signal-caller.

The Bucs Josh Freeman looked like a budding star in 2010, but after tossing 22 interceptions and losing five fumbles this season, his stock has plummeted. The same could be said for Sam Bradford, who missed six games to injury and threw a meager six touchdowns in ten starts. However, the blame in St. Louis can be spread throughout the organization. Bradford was bad, but he only a small part of the problem.

Chicago and Indianapolis have the best quarterback outlook, but neither appears to be in the market for a head coach after firing their general managers. Of course there’s always a possibility whomever they hire as a replacement could then dismiss either Lovie Smith or Jim Caldwell, although ownership seems committed to retaining both coaches.

At this point, Fisher is sitting in a good position. He could pack his bags for St. Louis or he could wait to see how things play out in Chicago and Indy. Being the only veteran candidate available, he should have little trouble finding a new job, especially for a franchise looking for a proven winner.

In 17 seasons with the Titans, Fisher compiled a regular season record of 142-120 and went 5-6 in the playoffs.
