No Franchise Tag For Vincent Jackson?

Did wide receiver Vincent Jackson do enough in 2011 to ensure a long-term contract? That’s the debate raging in the Chargers’ front office. Jackson played on a one-year, $11 million deal this season after being slapped with the franchise tag last winter. But according to one report, San Diego doesn’t plan to use the tag again and will instead negotiate an extended contract with their star wideout.

With the Chargers in need of upgrades at several positions, handing Jackson another inflated one-year deal (around $13 million) might be too steep a price. Offensive line, defensive line and safety are all top priorities on the offseason checklist. A multi-year deal for Jackson would lessen the burden on the 2012 salary cap, although it will take a hefty signing bonus to lock him up.

Jackson’s 60 receptions for 1106 yards are the second highest totals in his seven-year career. His nine touchdowns matched a career high set in 2009. While he’s a step below Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald, he still ranks as one of the NFL’s most dangerous deep threats.

The biggest issue remains consistency. Like the Eagles DeSean Jackson, Vincent has a tendency to disappear for stretches during the season. Seven of his nine scores came in his four 100-yard games. Over the last six weeks of the season, he failed to catch more than five balls and didn’t surpass 84 yards in any one game.

Working in Jackson’s favor is a lack of depth in the receiving corps. Malcolm Floyd set a personal best with 856 yards, but he’s never been the picture of health. Rookie Vincent Brown showed promise, but he’s extremely green. In addition, Antonio Gates turns 32 in June and is still struggling with lingering foot ailments.

Unless general manager A.J. Smith elects to pursue the likes of Reggie Wayne, Stevie Johnson, Dwayne Bowe, Marques Colston or DeSean Jackson (if he isn’t tagged), it’s unlikely he’ll find a suitable replacement for Vincent in the offense. However, considering the contentious relationship between Smith and Jackson in recent years, there’s no guarantee the latter won’t bolt if he isn’t tagged.

Whatever happens with Jackson, San Diego has a lot of retooling to do before the 2012 season begins.
