There’s no escaping karma–and that’s becoming evident in the continued downward spiral of the fraudulently dubbed ‘dream team’ aka the Philadelphia Eagles. The ‘talented on paper’ but character and toughness shy team suffered another hit today as cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was taken off the practice field with a cart. So far the details of his injury are vague but based on the reaction of teammates it doesn’t look good.

All that is known is that the injury is to the left knee and that Asomugha’s status will be reevaluated on Friday. He was reportedly participating in ‘non contact drill’ on one of the Eagles’ practice fields when he pulled up lame. From the way cornerback Brandon Hughes described the scene Asomugha may have been on the verge of being ‘humanely destroyed’:

“It’s a short-lived career, and to see a guy go down, you just hope it’s not as severe as what you saw initially. That’s what we’re hoping.”

Cornerback Joselio Hanson gave a different diagnosis–that it was just an overreaction to a minor injury which would be typical for this Eagles’ team:

“It looked bad, but they said he was going to be all right, expecting to come back tomorrow and practice.”

Currently, Asomugha is listed as ‘questionable’ on the Sports Options live odds service injury report. The Eagles have underachieved all season and more recently have been hit with a spate of injuries. They’ve been forced to start dimwitted Vince Young at quarterback–another curious move given that the more capable Mike Kafka is on the roster. Despite another setback in their season, safety Kurt Coleman tried to sound a ‘business as usual’ tone:

“We’ve got to stick to the game plan. Nnamdi’s definitely a big piece of what we do on defense, but we have guys we can rotate in, guys who can do similar things. Everybody has to step up their game if he can’t go. Everybody has to pick up the slack.”

Curtis Marsh added:

“One guy goes down, next guy goes in. That’s why everybody goes to meetings every day, so when you step in, you know exactly what’s going on.”

The New England/Philadelphia game is currently off the board at most NFL betting outlets. The Lucky’s chain of sportsbooks in Las Vegas has the Pats installed as a -3′ point favorite with the total set at 50′.
