Steelers’ Roethlisberger May Need Surgery

Potentially bad news for Pittsburgh Steelers’ fans concerning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger making the rounds today. No, he’s not taken to cruising for skanky sorority girls in Southern college bars again–he may need surgery to repair a broken foot. There is a silver lining, however, in that due to the extra rest provided by the lockout ‘Big Ben’ is feeling better. For now.
Roethlisberger played through the pain near the end of last season, though now says there were times his foot hurt so much it felt like he couldn’t walk. Now, he’s hoping he can make it through the year without going under the knife:
“I could have had surgery, but according to the doctors it would have been a really nasty process because of where the break was. It was better off trying not to do anything. It’s going to be something where we’re just going to have to, in essence, play it by ear.”
“If it continues to be as painful as it was at the end of last year, then I’m going to probably have to have the surgery.”
Roethlisberger relied on a metal reinforced cleat to make it through the rest of the season starting with the December 5th game against the Baltimore Ravens. For now, he says the foot feels better thanks to the extra rest he’s received during the NFL lockout:
“It’s doing really good. It’s healed up. Obviously, it helps when I’m not cutting and planting and doing all of these different activities. It’s really come a long way. I haven’t had too many problems with it recently.”
Roethlisberger was suspended for the first four games of the 2010 season due to his college bar/sorority girl fondling shenanigans but played well on his return. He put up solid numbers the rest of the way, passing for 3,200 yards with 17 touchdowns and five interceptions. The Steelers made it all the way to the Super Bowl but lost to the eventual champion Green Bay Packers. The NFL lockout is now in its 102nd day and although reports indicate that progress is being made in negotiations between the league’s players and owners as of yet there is no timetable for a settlement.
