Bellator 44 took place in Atlantic City, New Jersey in front of a sold out crowd, and the main event featured the conclusion of the Lightweight Tournament. Below is how the main card played out on MTV2.

Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Fierre Vs Michael Chandler

This fight was the conclusion of the lightweight tournament for Bellator, and the fight didn’t play out the way most people thought. Most thought Chandler would use his wrestling and control Patricky on the floor for 3 rounds, but we ended up seeing a stand up war. The two surprising things about this fight was that Patricky was able to stop the majority of Chandler’s shots, and Chandler was able to display some very fluent striking as well as having his chin tested a few times. The fight was outstanding from start to finish, and when all was said and done Chandler was able to get the win. Michael Chandler earned himself $100k, and will now face Eddie Alvarez for the Bellator Lightweight Strap.

Michael Chandler defeats Patricky Pitbull by Unanimous Decision [29-27, 29-27, 29-27]

Hector Lombard Vs. Falaniko Vitale

This was a strange fight that had an exciting ending. Hector Lombard was able to keep Vitale on the outside of his punches and kicks for 2 rounds. Vitale was landing some decent leg kicks, and some decent right hands but it was Lombard who was getting the better of the exchanges. When the third round started Lombard took the center of the cage, and landed a solid overhand right that dropped Vitale. Vitale got back up, and immediately fell back down and the ref stopped the fight. Below is the video of the KO from Bellator’s Youtube channel.

Alexander Shlemenko Vs Brett Cooper

This was a fun fight, and definitely the fight of the night. Brett Cooper and Alexander Shlemenko traded punches and kicks for 15 minutes, and it was amazing. Early on in the fight Shlemenko established his spinning back fist, and was able to land it dozens of times. Cooper displayed an incredible beard, and took some crazy shots from Shlemenko and seemingly walked through them. Brett Cooper landed some shots himself, and was landing some big right hands all the way up to the bell. Shlemenko won the fight via decision, but I think both fighters won over a lot of new fans.

Alexander Shlemenko def. Brett Cooper by Unanimous Decision [30-27, 30-28, 29-28]

Giedrius Karavackas def. Sam Oropeza by Submission (Arm lock 3:59, Round 3)
