Rondo Should Be Ready For Game 4

When it comes to dislocated elbow injuries, the one suffered by Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo during Saturday night’s win over the Heat looked horrifying. Even more shocking than the sight of his mangled arm may have been the fact that Rondo was able to return to the game after team doctors popped the elbow it back into place. His availability for tonight’s crucial Game 4 is uncertain, but head coach Doc Rivers expects his All-Star playmaker to take the court.
An MRI on the elbow was negative. However, the pain and swelling was much worse on Sunday. Despite Rivers’ confidence, it appears Rondo will be the dreaded game-time decision. The formula for whether a guy plays or not is simple for Rivers.
“But like I’ve said, if you’re on the floor, you’re healthy, and that’s the way it’s been. That’s been my motto since I’ve been here and our guys believe that.”
So, if Rondo is on the floor for warmups, it’s a good bet he’ll start. The real question is how effective will he be playing with what amounts to one arm. He finished Saturday’s game with 6 points and 11 assists in 35 minutes. He’s easily been the Celtics most consistent performer in the playoffs and his ability to find open teammates is what drives the offense.
Rondo isn’t the only wounded Celtic. Delonte West is dealing with a bruised left shoulder and Shaquille O’Neal is still bothered by Achilles and calf injuries after making an 8-minute cameo in Game 3. Former Heat guard Carlos Arroyo could see action if either Rondo or West can’t go.
There’s no doubt Rondo is one of the NBA’s true tough guys. Playing through pain is par for the course this time of year. Nothing a literal shot in the arm won’t cure. He sat out 14 games this season with hamstring and ankle problems.
A Boston win tonight would even their best of seven series against Miami at 2-2.
