Ty Lawson Sprains Ankle In Season Finale

As the fifth seeded Denver Nuggets prepare to face Oklahoma City in the opening round of the playoffs Sunday night, they are hoping starting point guard Ty Lawson will be ready to play. Lawson suffered a sprain to his left ankle which forced him to leave in the second quarter of last night’s loss to Utah. The ankle is swollen, but Lawson and head coach George Karl believes he’ll be okay for Game 1.
The second-year point guard flourished after Chauncey Billups and Carmelo Anthony were shipped to the Knicks in late February. He nearly doubled his season points and assist totals in March and April in helping lead the Nuggets to an 18-7 record down the stretch. In 80 games, Lawson averaged 11.7 points and 4.7 assists.
Stopping Oklahoma City’s dangerous combo of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook won’t be easy, so Denver will need all hands on deck after going 1-3 against the Thunder during the regular season. They finished tied for the second best home record in the league at 33-8. However, their 17-24 road tally is the second worst among Western Conference playoff teams.
If Lawson can’t go on Sunday, ex-Knick Raymond Felton will get the start. Felton ended the season strong scoring double digits in seven of his last games.
