Good NHL betting action in the Eastern Conference tonight as the Montreal Canadiens head to the TD BankNorth Garden in Boston to take on the Bruins in a battle of ‘original six’ adversaries.  The Bruins lead the Habs by two points for the Northeast Division lead, so clearly this matchup will be very important for both sides.

Both teams in similar form, with 6 wins in their last 10 games.  The Bruins are continuing their strange tendency of last year in that they play much better away from home–they’ve got a 14-10-3 record at the TD BankNorth Garden but a 16-6-4 record on the road.  Both teams are among the best defensive teams in the league–though Boston hasn’t exactly flourished in defensive battles at home.  In home games with a total of 5, the Bruins are just 4-7 on the year.

Ultimately, we can’t pass up a great price on Montreal against a mediocre home team.  The Habs have been at their best against divisional rivals, going 11-4 on the season for +7.8 units of profit.  Bruins are just 6-8 for -4.7 units against divisional opponents. The series has been a virtual toss up in recent years with the Bruins winning 10 of the last 19 and 5 of 9 at home.  This season, however, the Canadiens have swept Boston in all three meetings including a win at the Garden in November.   Worst case scenario this game is a toss up and taking a +140 price on what is essentially a ‘coin flip’ is the fundamental path to value based sports betting profits.
