Super Bowl Prop Bets: The TV Broadcast
Added on Feb 04, 2011 by Jack Thurman in
Among the countless Super Bowl prop bets listed at sportsbooks worldwide there’s no shortage of wagers dealing not with the game specifically, but with the television broadcast. In this post we’ll take a look at several of these and give our suggestions for the best betting position on each. The props in this post are all available at Bodog and reflect the current prices as of 12 noon Pacific.
THE GIRLFRIENDS PROP:
This one is pretty self explanatory–the prop asks which of the starting quarterbacks’ girlfriends will be shown first by the Fox TV cameras. Like most TV broadcast props, the rules stipulate that they must be shown during the game itself and not in pregame or postgame coverage. They also have to be live shots, so any still pictures or taped footage doesn’t count:
Jessica Szohr (Aaron Rodgers’ Girlfriend) -140
Ashley Harlan (Ben Roethlisberger’s Fiancee) +100
The likely reason that Jessica Szohr is favored here is that she’s famous, while ‘Big Ben’s’ girlfriend Ashley Harlan isn’t. Szohr is a well known actress–maybe not the level of a Emma Watson or Scarlett Johansen but one that works steadily in both TV and film. Her ‘breakthrough role’ is considered to be her current gig on CW’s ‘The Gossip Girl’. For this bet, however, I’m thinking her fame actually works against her. Ashley Harlan is a very lovely girl, but for lack of a better term she’s an ‘ordinary person’. She reportedly works as a physician’s assistant and doesn’t even have her own Wikipedia entry. This makes her much more intriguing to the public, and particularly so considering Roethlisberger’s well publicized controversies involving other women. The fact that Szohr works for a competing network doesn’t help. We’ll take the better price and look for Harlan to get TV face time first.
Bet Ashley Harlan +100
THE BRETT FAVRE PROP:
How Many Times will FOX mention “Brett Favre” on TV during the Game?
Over 2′ -170
Under 2′ +135
Once again, this has to be during the game itself and not pregame or postgame coverage. Everyone knows that Favre is a diva and an egomaniac, but in this matchup he’s actually relevant due to his long history with the Packers. He won a Super Bowl with the team and played in another and lost. The NFL isn’t going to be a mindless PR shill for ‘The Gunslinger’ but its hard to imagine that his name won’t come up several times during the broadcast of the game.
Bet Over 2′ -170
THE LOCKOUT PROP:
How Many Times will FOX mention “Lockout” on TV during the Game?
Over 1′ -120
Under 1′ -120
It’s well known that the NFL’s labor agreement expires after this season and with the proposal for expanding the season to 18 games there’s a real ‘bone of contention’ in reaching a new deal. That has made a lockout at the start of the 2011 season a real possibility. Our take, however, is that talk of this will be ‘verboten’ by NFL edict. For that reason, we’ll look for the ‘Under’.
Bet Under 1′ -120
In our next couple of posts post, we’ll take a look at some props dealing with the Super Bowl television ratings.
