Whether you’re a sports betting enthusiast or just a die hard fan, if you’ve watched NFL football long enough you know that the most important player on the team that no one talks about is the center.  The center is the anchor of the offensive line, and championship teams usually have a good one.  That’s bad news for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who may be forced to play Super Bowl XLV in Dallas on February 6 without starting center Maurkice Pouncey.  Pouncey left Sunday’s win over the New York Jets in the first quarter after linebacker Brian Thomas rolled over his leg, and early indications are that he’s got a high ankle sprain which takes 4 to 6 weeks to heal.

Pouncey was replaced by Doug Legursky, who did a solid job but has little in-game experience.  Pouncey didn’t put any weight on the ankle for the remainder of the game.  He’ll have further examination today but sounded upbeat about his Super Bowl prospects:

“I know in my heart that I’m playing in that game. I had the same injury before on my other ankle and I know how to attack it. I know how to approach things.”

Steelers’ coach Mike Tomlin took a ‘wait and see’ approach:

“I think to say anything at this point would be premature. Of course, it was such that he couldn’t go back in the game today. I am sure we will have more information that will be debated here in the next couple of weeks.”

Assuming that Pouncey’s injury is a high ankle sprain, it would take a miraculous recovery for him to even consider playing in the Super Bowl.  This will put considerable pressure on his backup Legursky who’ll get to show what he’s capable of on the biggest stage in sports.  The current Super Bowl betting line has the Steelers installed as a +2′ underdog to the Green Bay Packers.
