NBA Betting Odds: Detroit Pistons at Orlando Magic
Added on Jan 24, 2011 by Jack Thurman in
Monday night NBA betting features an Eastern Conference matchup between the Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons. Magic have regained their championship level form in the past month and are now just two games back of the Miami Heat in the Southeast Division. The Pistons have had their ups and downs but have been fairly competitive against the spread. Nevertheless they’re 16-28 SU and mired in fourth place in the Central.

Orlando should win and cover here, but they’re just a breakeven team against the spread in most situations. Making us even less interested in a side play is the fact that Detroit has been a dangerous underdog for much of the season. To successfully bet on sports you have to look beyond the SU wins and losses and look at how competitive teams are in their individual games. The Pistons have a winning pointspread record on the road (12-11 ATS), as an underdog (21-15 ATS) and against opponents with winning records (13-8 ATS). They’ve also covered 6 of the last 8 against Orlando despite a 4-5 SU mark–that includes a 3-1 ATS record on the Magic’s home court.
With no real edge on either side of this proposition we’ll turn our attention to the total–Orlando has improved their defense during their recent strong run. In 22 games against opponents with losing records they’ve gone Under in 14. In 8 games against Central Division foes they’re Under in 5. Pistons Under in 17 of 23 on the road and in 8 of 8 as a road dog in this price range (+9′ to +12). Our score projections peg this game in the low 180′s which gives us a nice overlay.
