UFC 123 Medical Suspensions

The Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission handed medical suspensions to five fighters from this past weekend’s UFC 123 event. Two fighters were suspended indefinitely.
Main-card fighter George Sotiropoulos defeated Joe Lauzon by submission via kimura in the second round. However, early in the fight Sotiropoulos was poked in the eye, and it hurt enough for him to go to the hospital after the fight. He returned in time for the post-fight press conference, and said he was ok after being checked out. He said he had “no permanent damage was done,” and that he expected no problems with it.
Dana White confirmed his next fight: a February match up with fellow lightweight Dennis Siver at February’s UFC 127 event. The show takes place in Sotiropoulos’ native Australia. A doctor needs to clear him in order to end his suspension.
Preliminary-card competitor Mike Lullo was the victim of a leg kicking clinic from his opponent Edson Mendes Barbosa. The fight was stopped because Lullo couldn’t stand anymore in the 3rd round, and the ref called the fight off. Lullo must have his knee and thigh cleared by a physician before returning to competition. Even if cleared, he faces a minimum suspension of 30 days for precautionary reasons.
Other suspensions included:
Matt Hughes: Suspended 60 days with no contact during training for 60 days for precautionary reasons
–Hughes lost via KO in the first 25 seconds of his fight with BJ Penn. He can not fight, or have gym contact, for 60 days because of being knocked out. This is a usual suspension for a KO victim.
Karo Parisyan: Suspended 30 days with no contact during training for 30 days for precautionary reasons
–Parisyan was TKO’d in the first two minutes of the fight by Dennis Hallman. It wasn’t too bad of a beating, and he only receives 30 days of no contact.
T.J. O’Brien: Suspended 30 days with no contact during training for 30 days for precautionary reasons
–O’Brien was TKO’d late in the second round while his opponent Paul Kelly held him in the mounted crucifix position.
